Email your Senators to Ask Them to Take a Stand on the Global Tobacco Treaty!

Can you imagine a world where tobacco ads don’t appear in convenience store windows and where soccer fields and race cars are free from tobacco corporation logos? A world without tobacco ads is where we’re headed—led by the 148 nations that have ratified the global tobacco treaty.

Though President Bush signed the global tobacco treaty three years ago today, he has refused to release it to the Senate for a ratification vote, the first step toward banning tobacco ads and ending tobacco industry interference in health policy in our country. During the President’s three-year delay, 1.2 million Americans have lost their lives to tobacco related-illnesses. We can stop this tragic loss of life, and ratifying the global tobacco treaty is a vital first step.

It is time that our country joins the rest of the world and ratifies this life-saving treaty!

Please email your Senators today and ask them to:
1) Take a public stand in support of the global tobacco treaty and
2) Call on the Bush Administration to submit the treaty to the Senate immediately.

On May 10, 2004, the United States signed the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), signaling an intention to ratify this first global public health treaty. At that point, the treaty was turned over to the State Department-where it remains. While the rest of the world is moving ahead and ratifying the global tobacco treaty, the U.S. public has seen little, if any, action taken by our government on the treaty since May 2004.

With 148 countries having ratified, the global tobacco treaty is already protecting more than 80% of the world's population. The World Health Organization has called this one of the most rapidly embraced United Nations treaties of all time. Yet, our government is on the sidelines as the rest of the world takes action to protect millions of lives from the tobacco epidemic.

Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death in the world, killing over 5 million people each year. Each year 400,000 Americans die from tobacco related illnesses, many of them my neighbors and your constituents. It is time that the U.S. stands up, joins the rest of the world, and ratifies the first global public health treaty.

The recently introduced legislation to provide FDA authority over tobacco (S.625) is a step in the right direction; however, it falls short of the provisions in the global tobacco treaty. Our government must ratify the global tobacco treaty and institute FDA regulation of tobacco products as a key way to implement its obligations. Please be vigilant and resist Big Tobacco's attempts to interfere with S.625 and our national tobacco control policy.

Senator, what is your position on the global tobacco treaty? I urge you to take a public stand in support of the treaty and to post your position prominently on your website. Please do everything in your power to ensure that the President submits the global tobacco treaty to the Senate immediately.
