Wouldn’t it be something if presidential candidates took the Think Outside the Bottle Pledge?

Last week in New Hampshire our organizers spoke with campaign staff for frontrunners like Sen. John McCain, and handed reusable Think Outside the Bottle water bottles directly to Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

I am writing to ask that you take the Think Outside the Bottle Pledge and make it a part of your platform. In taking the Pledge you are committing to supporting public water systems and choosing tap over bottled water.

Across the country, mayors and local officials are standing with thousands of citizens in supporting the Pledge. These officials are looking for national leadership in giving our public water systems the support they need.

As you may know, the manufacture, transport, and disposal of plastic water bottles is taking a significant toll on our environment. What's more - misleading marketing of bottled water has also deeply eroded confidence in our public water systems, though they are among the strongest in the world.

The time is now for national leaders to turn the spotlight on this manipulation of consumers and environmental problem - and focus the nation's attention on the need to reinvest in our most essential public resource.
